Getting Started

User Page Sandbox

For brand new users, practice your skills on your userpage. It can be found by substituting "username" for your registered username in the following URL: http://www.roosterpedia.net/wiki/User:username.

Your user page is your user page. It won't, or shouldn't, be edited by anybody else but you; the only time the sysops will change a user page is if there's vulgar, hateful, sexually explicit, or otherwise inappropriate content within. It is there for you to experiment with the Wiki controls and familiarize yourself with the way the website works. Also, don't worry about messing things up or looking like an idiot. Every change to a page is archived, so even if you mistakenly delete the entire article, it can be reverted to its previous form with one click.

Explaining the Controls

The buttons on the top are somewhat standard, but they list as follows: Bold text, Italic text, Internal link, External link, Level 2 headline, Embed image, Media file link, Mathematical formula, Ignore Wiki formatting, Signature with timestamp, and Horizontal line.

Bold and italic texts are self-explanatory. In the Wiki world, these text emphases are created by using a series of apostrophes as opposed to letter tags. To prevent confusion with the number of apostrophes, which can happen very easily, the simplest way to use this feature is to highlight the text you want emphasized and click on the appropriate button.

Internal link is the Wiki linking you see everywhere. You can link to anything at all, and it will become a page within the Wiki. If the link shows up in red, then there is no content on that page and it will be added to the wanted pages list. If the link shows up in blue, you've successfully linked to another page with content! The links have [[double brackets]] around them like that. If I typed that in a Wiki editing window, it would show up as a link to an article about double brackets. Now, if I wanted to link to a page about double brackets, but I didn't want the link to say double brackets, I would format it like this instead: [[double brackets|DBs]] and then the page would take me to the article about double brackets, but the link would read DBs. If it's confusing, try it out; you'll see how it works. This link style is relevant for ALL links created in the Wiki; you can always change the wording of a link by using the vertical divider key (shift + \ ) and typing in alternate words.

External linking is creating a link outside of the Wiki itself. The URL goes in the double brackets; don't forget the suffix or the link will not work. Again, you can use the vertical divider to change the wording of the link. Interwiki linking is also an option that will be explained in its own section.

Level 2 headline creates the sections in an article or a profile. It is formatted with a series of = signs. For instance, ==VocalDrummer is a Cool Guy== would create a section header for all the reasons why VocalDrummer is a cool guy. There is no button for this, but three = will get you a subheader; i.e., ===Cool things VocalDrummer does=== will give you a subsection in which you can list all the cool things VocalDrummer has done. Lastly, the asterisk can be used to create a bulleted list.

Embed image plants an image in the article. An image should first be uploaded to the Wiki itself by using the upload file link on the left side of the page. Just clicking the embed image button will embed the image into your page with no further formatting. It also uses the double brackets. If you want the image to be a thumbnail, type |thumb after the image name. You can move the picture to the left, right, or center by placing the appropriate word inside the brackets in the formatting of |left and so on. The thumbnail size can be set in pixels by typing |300px or the appropriate image width. Anything else following a vertical divider will become the image caption. All of this must be done within the vertical brackets; the order does not matter EXCEPT for the caption, which must come last.

Roosterpedia doesn't allow media linking as of right now, so that button is moot. I have utterly no idea what the mathematical formula button does, and frankly, math scares me, so I leave it alone.

Ignore Wiki formatting is useful if you want to share something that uses the Wiki code but you don't want it to show up as a link or an embedded image. It just stops the Wiki from changing the format; for instance, if I wanted [[this text]] to show up exactly like that and not a link, I would highlight it and click that button, which would give me <nowiki>[[this text]]</nowiki> and it would show up as that text in brackets rather than a link.

Signature pus your name and a timestamp after everything you write; this is useful and highly recommended on talk pages where you are leaving comments about an article without editing the article itself, but is not necessary to use when actually editing an article. The shorthand version of this is ~~~~.

Lastly, horizontal line just puts a horizontal line in the article you're editing. Pretty simple.

Creating an Article

After /wiki/ in the URL, anything you type will take you to that page, regardless of whether or not there's content. This is how you create new pages. If there is no content, it will give you the option to create some. The biggest thing to remember is that capitalization counts in links; Capital Letters and capital letters will be two separate articles. The mods will link them together so one redirects to the other if this happens, but it's best if people just remember that capital letters do count.

Interwiki Linking

Interwiki linking works just like linking within Roosterpedia, but it links to articles in other wikis. For this, you still use double brackets as you would for an article link, but you add a prefix. The prefix you use is dependent on the wiki that you wish to access.

Prefix Direction Usage Example
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ [[wikipedia:Main Page]]
Encyclopedia Dramatica http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/ [[ed:Main Page]]
Uncyclopedia http://www.uncyclopedia.org/wiki/ [[un:Main Page]]
Wiktionary http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ [[wiktionary:Main Page]]
Wikiquote http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/ [[wikiquote:Main Page]]
